Witnessing the Body’s Wisdom
A Somatic Journey Through Shame and Grief, Returning to Authentic Joy
Learn to apply somatic techniques to help clients release stuck patterns, ease physical tension, and heal attachment wounds stored in the body.
Our first session starts on February 4, 2026
What is your client’s body telling you about their trauma history?
What are your clients holding back and how can you help them release it?
Beneath the surface of many trauma stories lies a quiet undercurrent of shame and grief—emotions so deeply woven into our experience that their origins can be difficult to trace. They’re pervasive, often invisible, shaping how clients see themselves and the world around them.
Shame can disguise itself as self-criticism, perfectionism, or fear of failure, regularly silencing the body’s natural expression and keeping clients stuck in patterns of withdrawal, collapse, or emotional distance.
Grief also takes many forms and finds its origin in losses of all kinds: loss of safety, of connection, of relationship, and even loss of opportunity or a life unlived.
Together, they can lock the nervous system into a cycle of self-blame and loss that words alone can’t reach—weighing heavily in the heart, and muting aliveness and connection. Over time, they can become the water our clients swim in—so familiar they hardly notice it until the next wave arrives, stirring a flood of emotion, withdrawal, or collapse.
For therapists and healers, these emotions can be especially difficult to meet. Shame hides behind symptoms that naturally shrink from investigation, while grief can feel so vast and amorphous that it’s hard to know where to begin. Even seasoned clinicians may sense that the body holds the key, but without a clear entry point, the work can feel elusive, circular, or incomplete. Insight alone isn’t enough; something deeper needs to move.
This is where the body becomes the guide.
In Somatic Experiencing®, healing begins not by revisiting the story, but by learning to listen to the body’s impulses toward completion and restoration.
In this rare live, experiential series, Dr. Peter Levine—developer of Somatic Experiencing®—invites you to witness the body’s wisdom in motion. Through unscripted clinical demonstrations, analysis and debrief sessions, and group dialogue, you’ll observe how shame softens into dignity and how grief can unfold into authentic joy.

Led by Dr. Peter Levine, the originator of Somatic Experiencing® and your host, Dr. Diane Poole Heller
All LIVE sessions meet online for 90 minutes (dates and times listed below)
SESSION 1: Wednesday, February 4, 2026 @ 12 - 1:30 pm MT
Somatic Patterns of Shame: Identification and Intervention
In this opening session, Dr. Peter Levine conducts live Somatic Experiencing® demonstrations exploring the physiology of shame. You’ll witness how shame reveals itself through subtle body patterns—collapse, withdrawal, and tension—and how gentle tracking, pacing, and attuned presence can help restore dignity, safety, and connection.
Through real-time observation and guided reflection, participants learn how the body’s protective responses can be safely met and transformed into pathways for regulation, empowerment, and authentic self-expression.
- Identify somatic indicators of shame such as collapse, tension, or withdrawal in the body
- Use gentle tracking, pacing, and titration to support safety and dignity during activation
- Understand how shame functions as a protective mechanism and transforms into resilience and connection
- See how practitioner presence and attunement creates the conditions for regulation and repair
SESSION 2: Tuesday, February 10, 2026 @ 12 - 1:30 pm MT
Shame Review: From Collapse to Dignity
In this follow-up session, Dr. Peter Levine reviews and analyzes key moments from the live shame demonstrations, guiding participants to see how the nervous system expresses protection, regulation, and repair through micro-movements, gestures, and facial shifts.
Through moment-by-moment video review and discussion, learners deepen their ability to recognize somatic markers of shame and understand the practitioner choices that help transform collapse into safety, containment, and dignity.
- Identify micro-expressions and subtle somatic cues that signal shame activation or regulation
- Analyze the importance of pacing, presence, and sequence in guiding clients toward re-engagement and resilience
- Translate observation into applied skill—tracking shifts in posture, breath, and affect in real time
- Support clients as they move from constriction toward self-compassion and embodied empowerment
SESSION 3: Thursday, February 12, 2026 @ 12 - 1:30 pm MT
Somatic Patterns of Grief: Recognition and Resolution
In this session, Dr. Peter Levine conducts two live Somatic Experiencing® demonstrations focused on grief and the body’s natural movement toward release, integration, and authenticity.
Participants will witness how grief manifests as physical sensations—heaviness, trembling, breath changes—and how attuned presence and pacing allow these emotions to move safely through the body. Through real-time observation, learners explore how grief transforms constriction into connection, supporting a renewed sense of vitality, meaning, and wholeness.
- Recognize the somatic signatures of grief, including holding patterns and impulses toward release
- Support clients in accessing grief safely through orientation, grounding, and containment
- See how the competition of grief patterns facilitates restoration of connection, flow, and authenticity
- Witness the practitioner’s role in fostering safety and presence during moments of deep emotional emergence
SESSION 4: Monday, February 16, 2026 @ 12 - 1:30 pm MT
Grief Review: Restoring Flow and Authenticity
In this session, Dr. Peter Levine guides participants through a detailed review of the live grief demonstrations, illuminating the body’s subtle language of mourning and renewal. Through slowed-down observation and discussion, participants learn to track the micro-movements, breath shifts, and autonomic patterns that reveal grief’s progression from contraction to flow.
This reflective process helps practitioners translate what they see into clinical intuition—recognizing how grief, when safely supported, restores openness, vitality, and authentic presence in both client and practitioner.
- How to identify key somatic markers of grief integration—breath expansion, orienting, and softening of tone or posture
- Ways to support clients as grief transforms from pain to meaning, fostering embodied authenticity
- How to observe and interpret the practitioner’s pacing, attunement, and verbal interventions during grief work
- The role of reflective witnessing in strengthening empathy, regulation, and therapeutic confidence
SESSION 5: Thursday, February 19, 2026 @ 12 - 1:30 pm MT
Integration and Practitioner Reflection: Applying Somatic Insights
The series concludes with a final live demonstration and group reflection led by Dr. Peter Levine. Participants will witness one more unscripted SE™ session that brings together the key themes of shame, grief, and the body’s innate movement toward authenticity and joy.
Following the demo, Peter facilitates an open dialogue and guided reflection process, inviting participants to share observations, sensations, and insights from their own nervous systems. Through this collective witnessing, the learning becomes embodied—anchored not only in knowledge, but in felt experience.
- Synthesize principles of shame and grief work into an integrated somatic framework
- Learn to use group reflection and embodied dialogue to deepen personal and professional insight
- Learn how witnessing itself supports co-regulation, empathy, and practitioner growth
- Gain practices for sustaining authenticity, presence, and embodied resilience beyond the course

BONUS #1
Trauma Symptoms Checklist + Resilience Checklist
Get insights into how trauma might be affecting you or your clients.
Since everyone responds to past trauma differently—and there is no single way to think, feel, behave, or heal—these practical resources are designed to help you identify common responses and symptoms of trauma and assess progress on the healing journey.
When used in tandem in therapy, these checklists give clients a clear way to see and understand their progress. First, the Trauma Symptoms Checklist is used to assess a client’s status at the beginning of therapy to set a reference point from which changes or progress can be measured.
Then, the Resilience Checklist gauges progress after therapy—and showcases the benefits of that treatment for health and well-being. You can also use it to streamline report creation and incorporate it into session notes.
Available to print, download or use digitally as a fillable PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can we help you?
Do I need to be a therapist to benefit from this training?
While many of the students who take this course are both new and experienced practitioners (in a wide variety of professional roles), we do have non-therapists who join us and find the exercises and learning very beneficial to their well-being.
Due to the sensitive nature of the material, we do encourage non-therapists who choose to take this course to have therapeutic support in place should the material become activating.
Please note, the material in this course is not meant as a substitute for therapy. And if you are currently working with any mental health professional, we encourage you to invite them to join this program with you as well.
How long can I access the course materials?
You’ll have lifetime access to ALL training materials, including videos, transcripts, worksheets, demos, resources and bonuses. You may also download, print or save materials at any time to your professional reference library for personal use. In the interest of privacy, client demo videos are not downloadable.
Will taking this course qualify me as SE™ trained?
Taking this program does NOT replace the 8-module training through Somatic Experiencing® to be “SE™ Trained.” This program DOES ensure you will be “SE® Informed” on fundamental skills and terminology essential to the method.
Are the class sessions live or pre-recorded?
There are a total of five, 90-minute LIVE sessions, streamed online via Zoom.
Live demonstrations will be conducted by Dr. Levine in three of the five sessions, with the remaining sessions dedicated to debrief, analysis, group processing, and Q&A. Dr. Levine will review each demonstration thoroughly, pausing to explain his process and techniques at each step.
Every live call will also be recorded and stored inside your personal learning portal, so you can watch and rewatch at any time. However, to get the most out of this course, we highly encourage you to attend the live sessions, if you can.
What if I can’t make it to the live calls—should I still take this course?
We would love to have you join each session live, but we recognize that you may already have prior commitments. If you’re unable to join us, we do record all sessions and training (including the Q&A), so you can still receive all the information and training you need.
Many of our students are unable to some (or all) of the live sessions and still find the recorded training, plus client demos, additional resources, audio, transcripts and course bonuses to be highly valuable and relevant to their learning goals. Additionally, the course materials are yours to download (other than client demos) and keep in your professional reference library, so you can come back and revisit the material at any time.
